CARMINE GORGA'S WORK
During a summer of intense intellectual struggle with Keynes’ General Theory in 1965, Carmine reduced the understanding of a major category of economic thought, Saving, to Hoarding—namely, all nonproductive wealth.
Forty years later, the word Hoarding led him to investigate the thought of Moses. But that is only part of the story. Control of Hoarding is the very core of Economic Justice.
This is an Aristotelian construction that ruled the world up to John Locke and especially Adam Smith.
Both these highly influential authors switched their attention—and ours—from the grand design of economic justice to the justice of property rights.
This switch prompted Karl Marx to focus his attention—and ours—on the injustice of property rights.
These two conceptions have given rise to
Individualism vs. Collectivism and Capitalism vs. Socialism/Communism.
Caught between these opposing vises, billions of people’s lives are destroyed.
Philosophers and mathematicians, ecologists and physicists, literati and moralists will be especially interested in this work. Carmine welcomes collaboration toward further unfolding of his work.
With stern use of rigorous rules of epistemology and consistent assistance from fundamental principles of logic, Carmine escapes the strictures of modern thought.
Carmine’s work reaches a synthesis of the two opposing forces of the modern world with his Somism—men and women in the social context (again, an Aristotelian conception); and Concordianism, as singled out especially in his proposal of Jubilee 2020 and creation of The Bancor.
The details of Somism and Concordianism can be found in his elaboration of economic rights and responsibilities as well as in his call to a return to the domain of Economic Justice.
Justice, Carmine has recognized to be a virtue. As such, economic justice cannot be implemented without assistance from the supreme virtue of love: it takes love to give and receive economic justice.
These are not scattered thoughts. They are all related to each other in a system of thoughts that Carmine calls Relationalism.
The Transformation of Rationalism into Relationalism
Ultimately, Carmine’s work is a work in the transformation of Rationalism into Relationalism, a world in which everything is related to everything else.
The pivot from Rationalism to Relationalism is the core of Economic Rights and Responsibilities. Interestingly, when the United Nations was formed, there was talk of establishing its headquarters in Concord. That was not to be. That has been a lucky strike for Concord. Why? The reason is exemplified in this historical vignette. A copy of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights was given to Mahatma Gandhi. A few months went by without a response. People eventually asked him what he thought of the Declaration. The Mahatma responded: “I showed the Declaration to my mother. She said, ‘I see rights, where are the responsibilities’”? The function of mutual economic rights and responsibilities is to create the common good.
